Samenvatting

Nowadays, Villa Baviera is a settlement in the Chilean foothills, with some of its inhabitants being of German descent and others of Chilean descent. They are the children of a group of immigrants who were part of a religious community from the post-war era, arriving in Chile in the '60s to help the orphans from the region. But the enclave then known as Colonia Dignidad turned into a slave and torture camp, where 300 settlers spent nearly 40 years at the mercy of their leader, Paul Schäfer. Locked up in an area secured by barbed wire, they were the prisoners of a sophisticated surveillance system under which they suffered unspeakable abuse. Colonia Dignidad was the most horrifying cult in Latin America, and possibly the world. During the COVID-19 crisis, former settlers who still live in the old Colonia Dignidad grounds report that the current board members are violating the rights of the inhabitants, just like in Paul Schäfer's time. Winfried Hempel, the lawyer for the victims, is trying to get the justice system to understand the singularity of the situation that is still going on in Villa Baviera, and seeks to protect these former settlers. In the middle of this debate, and through the accounts of investigators in Germany, the beginnings of the enclave are revealed. Meanwhile, the Survivors who arrived as children or were born in the enclave tell us about their own experiences arriving in Chile and how their lives –as well as those of their parents – became such an unfathomable hell.
